I started my BYUH undergrad journey in Winter 2020 with an undecided major for about 2 years. My family owns a small motel of its own, so I was somewhat interested in studying business. However, after witnessing how Covid-19 affected the business world, I was compelled to major in Business Management with emphasis in Marketing.
As a student employee, I chose positions in customer service to study the patterns of what attracts customers to a business, what their expectations and wants are, and how to provide solutions that satisfies their concerns. My goal after I graduate is to refine my skills in marketing and use them to help business succeed.
All BYUH business management students have access to external learning sources such as HubSpot Academy and LinkedIn Learning. As a requirement of our syllabus, I had the privilege of taking additional courses that provide more information and tools to use in marketing. I have recently became Digital Marketing Certified from HubSpot Academy and received certificates of completion from LinkedIn Learning in courses such as:
These skills are essential to my development in the areas of critical thinking, problem-solving, and marketing. You can find the rest of these credentials on my LinkedIn Profile: Ida Cocker.
I have always loved art growing up, which is why I chose to minor in Visual Arts-Painting. At first, I imagined the classes to be fun and less stressful than the rest, I found that art requires time, creativity, and dedication. I decided to use this to my advantage and be seek inspiration from others on how I can be artistically creative in the business world. As a Tongan woman, my area of confidence lies within Polynesian tribal design. On the side, I take commissions for small projects such as tribal mural paintings, cultural costume designs, and tattoo designs, although currently I am not accepting commissions for the latter. You can find a few examples of my work here. My idea was gain personal experience on utilizing my creativity in a professional setting, how to market my product to my target audience, building and maintaining consumer relationship, and develop my critical thinking during difficult situations. In the future, I would like to put my experience into practice.
